The Situation

Since 2014, Yemen has been under fire from clashes between Houthi rebels and government forces. At present, more than 22 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance, out of a population of 27 million.

This civil war has intensified since a coalition of Arab states led by Saudi Arabia has been supporting the government, bombing several regions, notably Sana’a and Aden governorates in the west of the country. Part of the Yemeni population have been profoundly affected and are in need of emergency care. The intensification of the war threatens the life and livelihoods of tens of thousands of civilians and deprives them of humanitarian assistance.

The conflict and the rapid deterioration in living conditions – in particular the shortage of foodstuffs owing to the blockade set up by the coalition – has led to famine conditions in some parts of the country, particularly the south and west.

Our work

Doctors of the World has been active in Yemen since 2007, but increased our capacity in response to the conflict.

We currently support 13 medical facilities in the governorates of Sana’a, Ibb, and Amanat Alasimah. We supply medical equipment, emergency assistance and essentials medicine to those in need. We also support mobile clinics that provide care to patients who cannot reach the health centers.

In 2018, our medics have provided 75,000 primary healthcare consultations, screened 9,000 children for malnutrition and provided 16,500 people with mental health services.
