Resources for GP practices

Resources for Clinicians
Guide to recognising ‘urgent’ and ‘immediately necessary’ care
NB: this resource applies primarily to secondary care settings – all treatment delivered in primary care is free of
charge.
Care classified as ‘urgent’ and ‘immediately necessary’ should always be provided regardless of a patient’s ability to
pay for it. This guide should help clinicians to understand what is meant by ‘urgent’ and ‘immediately necessary’ care
in this context, to make informed decisions and to advocate for their patients where needed.
Resources for Commissioners
Toolkit for commissioners
This toolkit explains why commissioners should help to build Safe Surgeries locally and outlines steps they can take to support best practice primary care provision for everyone. Share it with your CCG!
Resources for Front Line Staff
Quick-reference poster for reception staff
This poster should be displayed behind reception and helps to remind staff of good practice guidelines for registering patients, in line with NHS England guidance and Safe Surgeries advice.
Toolkit for Social Prescribing Link Worker
The Toolkit outlines nine steps social prescribing link workers and frontline workers can take to help support migrant patients access to healthcare.
Poster for Social Prescribing Link Workers
This poster should be displayed behind reception and other staff areas to help remind staff of steps to take to improve access to healthcare for migrants.
Social prescribing template
Referring patients to non-health support, especially for those facing complex social or legal issues, is a key part of holistic care. This template, to be completed and updated by practice staff, offers suggestions of key service types which Surgeries should be aware of in their local area. Some organisations which provide services nationally have already been suggested.
Posters for patient awareness
These posters below are designed for display in waiting areas and let patients know that they are in a safe place and are entitled to register with a GP. If the language translation you need isn’t there, let us know.
For practices that need to display information in a number of languages, we’ve also created a single document with a shorter message in multiple languages:
The ‘All are welcome’ and ‘Don’t have documents’ posters can be downloaded as PDF’s and can be used together or individually.
